The '1 star' is designed as an introductory / encouragement award, set at the level typically reached by most people after around 6 hours on the water. The award can be taken in any type of paddle sport craft and is a great start in becoming a confident paddler.

The '2 Star' is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water in a variety of craft. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact.
